Express Entry proof of funds 2026: what your bank letter must show
If you're applying as a Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades applicant, you have to prove you can afford to settle in Canada. That means hitting IRCC's number and getting an official letter from every bank where you keep the money.
How much you need
IRCC's current table, dated July 7, 2025, is still the one on its proof of funds page as of September 30, 2026. IRCC updates it every year, so check before you apply.
| Family members | Funds needed (CAD) |
|---|---|
| 1 | $15,263 |
| 2 | $19,001 |
| 3 | $23,360 |
| 4 | $28,362 |
| 5 | $32,168 |
| 6 | $36,280 |
| 7 | $40,392 |
| Each extra person | $4,112 |
Family size counts you, your spouse or partner, and your dependent children, even if they're Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and even if they aren't coming with you.
Who doesn't need it
You don't need proof of funds if you're applying under the Canadian Experience Class, or if you're authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer.
The catch: IRCC's system still asks every applicant for a proof of funds document. If you're exempt, you upload a short letter explaining why.
What the bank letter must include
IRCC wants official letters from every bank or financial institution where you have an account, printed on the institution's letterhead, with:
- The bank's address, phone number, and email address
- Your name (make it match your passport to avoid questions)
- Your outstanding debts, like credit cards and loans
- For each current bank and investment account: the account number, the date it was opened, the current balance, and the average balance for the past six months
A screenshot of your banking app or a printed statement isn't the same thing. Ask for the letter early; many banks take a week or more.
The rules on the money itself
- You can't borrow it from another person.
- You can't count equity in real estate.
- You have to be able to legally access it.
- A joint account with your accompanying spouse counts. An account in your spouse's name only can count if you show you can access it.
- It has to be available when you apply and when your visa is issued. Bring proof when you land, and declare CA$10,000 or more to the border officer.
- If your family size changes after you apply, for example a new baby, IRCC can check your funds again.
What about gifted money?
IRCC doesn't publish a rule on gifts. Many applicants use a gift letter from a family member, but that's a common practice, not an IRCC form. If a large gift makes up part of your funds, talk to a licensed RCIC or lawyer.
