Express Entry upload rules: size, file types, and one file per field
Plenty of applications stall on the upload screen. The rules are simple once you know them.
The limits
- Up to 4 MB per file in the IRCC secure account. Some applications show a lower limit, as low as 2 MB.
- Accepted types: PDF, JPG, PNG, DOC, and TIFF.
- One file per field. Uploading a second file replaces the first, and only the last one is saved.
How to fit everything
- Combine each employer's letter and supporting documents into one PDF.
- Scan at 150 DPI or less to keep files small.
- Scan police certificates in colour, from the originals.
After you submit
You can only upload more if IRCC asks, or through IRCC's web form. That's why the file has to be complete before you press submit.
File names
IRCC doesn't publish a file naming rule. Clear names help you keep track, but they don't affect the application.
Common questions
What is the file size limit for Express Entry documents?
Up to 4 MB per file in the IRCC secure account, and as low as 2 MB for some applications.
Can I upload more than one file in a field?
No. Each field takes one file, and a second upload replaces the first. Combine documents into one PDF.
